One hundred miles north of San Francisco, the Sonoma County coast meets the Pacific Ocean in a magnificent display of nature. This is the location of The Sea Ranch, an area covering several thousand acres of large, open meadows and forested natural settings interspersed with award winning architecture. The ecologically inspired plan drawn up for The Sea Ranch in the mid-1960s caused a quiet revolution in architecture.
Renowned landscape designer Lawrence Halprin’s master plan incorporated a set of building guidelines that structured the visual as well as physical impact upon the landscape. Subsequent buildings by architects such as Joseph Esherick, Charles Willard Moore, Donlyn Lyndon, and William Turnbull have been recognized worldwide for their remarkable environmental sensitivity.
The public is invited to attend this March 13th evening to enjoy insights into the planning processes designed to uphold Lawrence Halprin’s original vision and assure a cohesive aesthetic for the entire tract while remaining closely connected with the natural environment. There is much to learn from what has worked well and the challenges that currently face stewards of this significant site as it looks ahead to the next 50 years.

Praise for The Sea Ranch: “The Sea Ranch was one of the most influential developments of the 1960s. Planned by Lawrence Halprin, it was an inspiration to the whole Pacific Rim. Its genesis, history and present state are thoughtfully chronicled in The Sea Ranch.” —Architectural Review
“The Sea Ranch was a community in California that melded inspirational design with an environmentally friendly approach. Lyndon, an architect, was involved from the start; this is his view of an idyllic experiment.” —Wallpaper
