Red Lantern

Red Lantern is an assemblage of
Chinese-inspired elements referencing
the history of Chinese migrants who came to California during the mid-19th century Gold Rush, and stayed to build the Central Pacific Railroad. The elemental design touches on the themes of migration, diaspora, and assimilation. The installation highlights traditional elements of Chinese culture: eggshell-lacquered Lantern, over-size chopsticks with inlaid mother-of-pearl and aquatic plants of lotus and water spinach, -- weaving them into a contemporary context against the backdrop of Sonoma’s wine country. The Lantern is laced with a veil of ornate filigree: hand-sculpted cloud patterns inspired by Chinese paintings and adorned with layers of ruby red crystal droplets reminiscent of a Chinese wedding headdress.
